DEGREE OF PROTECTION OF ENCLOSURES



DEGREE OF PROTECTION OF ENCLOSURES:

  The degree of protection refers to the design constructions of the enclosure with reference to protection against the accidental contacts with the live parts, moving parts and also protection of internal parts. The designation used for the degree of protection consists of the letter I.P. followed by two characteristic numerals.
1.       The first characteristic numerals designates the degree of protection of person against contacts with live or moving parts inside the enclosure and of machines against ingress of solid foreign bodies.
2.       The second characteristic numerals designate the degree of protection against harmful ingress of water.

EXAMPLE: IP 11S. The first two letters ‘IP’ indicates degree of protection code.

        The first characteristic numeral 1 indicates that the machine is protected against the vertically dropping water.

        The second characteristic numeral 1 indicates that the machine is protected against the vertically dropping water.

        The letter ‘S’ indicates that the machine was tested when not running. Motors used in Refineries are IP54 or IP55
